Abu Dhabi's advanced radar system to catch out rule-breaking drivers to go live on Friday
Abu Dhabi's advanced radar system to catch out rule-breaking drivers to go live on Friday

The new technology will detect motorists using phones or failing to wear seatbelts when behind the wheel

Abu Dhabi Police issued a reminder that high-tech radars to catch out motorists using phones or failing to wear seat belts will go live on January 1.

The force released a video on Friday on Instagram stating the new technology will soon be introduced.

The network of radars can automatically detect drivers flouting the rules and uses cameras powered by artificial intelligence.

Motorists will receive a text message detailing the infringement.

The new initiative is a joint operation between Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Digital Authority.

Known as vast – vehicular attention and safety tracker – it aims to preserve the safety of drivers, passengers and other road users.

Police have repeatedly reminded pedestrians and motorists to follow the rules of the road.

They regularly post pictures of people jaywalking or driving recklessly.

Stiff penalties are in place to deter offenders.

Under the current laws, motorists caught using their mobile phones while driving face fines of at least Dh800 ($220) and can receive four black points on their licence.
